What is post-menopause?

We have turned to the Menopause support app Olivia to find out what’s the deal with menopause. In a 4-part series you will get to immerse yourself in the timeline of menopause: perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause. In this text you will get to know more about post-menopause.

There are three stages of menopause: perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause. Most women will go through all these stages. However, it varies a lot in duration and the level of intensity in which you experience symptoms during the different stages.

What is post-menopause?

You are considered to be done with menopause, for the rest of your life really, after you have had your final menstruation. During the first years of post-menopause, you may still experience some menopause issues related to low levels of oestrogen. It is common to have some hot flushes and sweat during the night 4-5 years after menopause, but it usually disappears with time.

Do I still have symptoms?

Some symptoms can continue after menopause, such as unwanted weight gain around the waist and vaginal dryness. There symptoms remain due to low oestrogen and progesterone. It is good that there are lifestyle changes and medication that can make these symptoms more manageable.

Being in post-menopause also puts you at a bigger risk of long-term illnesses such as osteoporosis and heart disease. It is good to understand that the female body is driven by hormones, and that is the reason for women running a higher risk for some diseases earlier than men.
